The Hope

To reuse the title of one of the greatest movies of all time, Stargate Universe may indeed have A New Hope.

Despite Syfy's cancellation of the show this month it seems that SGU is not D.O.A. entirely. The first bit of hope comes from MGM officially ending its financial troubles thanks to JP Morgan, which bodes well for the future of the Stargate franchise. The $500 million reboot will help with television and movie projects that were hurt by the company's bankruptcy problems. Franchises such as James Bond were in critical danger and MGM was on the verge of selling off the royalties to keep themselves afloat. But MGM isn't the only glimmer of hope on the horizon.

The producers of SGU haven't said "die" yet either. Brad Wright was out to sea at the time of the show's cancellation and didn't hear about it until he made it back to shore. Upon returning he was happy to hear of the disappointment by all the fans. Not because of their pain, but for their support and the petitions that have been started (like the one found here). Since Syfy contributes only a portion of the funding to Stargate, Wright hopes that MGM's reboot will help keep the franchise alive. Executive produer Joseph Mallozzi also commented on SGU's future: “Obviously, it doesn’t look good,” but he doesn't know if its the end of the show either. It's interesting that a while ago the producers mentioned that there were no plans for having the show continue in any other format if the show were to be canceled. It seems that they've changed their minds since then (thankfully). There is also the possibility that the show could get moved to another network. What are your thoughts on that?

Finally, take the following piece of information with a grain of salt, Syfy is a division of NBC Universal, which is currently in some heavy business negotiations. Once the deal goes through there are reports that there will be a changing of the guard which could mean some reorganizing throughout the company, (and fingers crossed) over at Syfy too. Now, this isn't in anyway a certainty, none of these things are, but this one is the least likely to actually help the show. I'm just saying that it could happen.

As mentioned in previous posts, the best hope for the show is for you to pledge your support. Buy episodes online through iTunes or Amazon, buy the first season on DVD or Blu-ray for sci-fi fans in your family, sign petitions, and most importantly, don't forget to watch the final ten episodes when the show returns for the back half of the season this spring. Keep the faith folks, shows have been resurrected before, let's just hope SGU's current sentence is more equivalent to being frozen in carbonite than the Pit of Carkoon.

Once again, Happy Holidays folks, and thanks to [GateWorld] for the info.

Dream on.
