The Rhythm (9)

You may be sick of zombies, but Michael Bay isn't. Plus, Browncoats use the internet to unite for a Firefly takeover, and the iPad 2 announcement you probably didn't know you were waiting for. And let's not forget rumors from EA, and Amazon slaps Netflix in the face with the white glove of streaming content..sort of

The Rhythm: transmitted and translated from the depths of cyberspace.

The Mill: Bring Out Your Dead Edition

Yes? For those of you who haven't been scarred or scared shitless yet by the insanity that is the Dead Space franchise (I'm currently finishing up the first one, don't tell me how the second ends), EA recently let slip that Dead Space 3 is in the works. So is this really a rumor? Hell, is this even a surprise? I guess not, but I don't think it has been completely confirmed, and a release date definitely doesn't exist yet. Either way, just when I thought I was done traipsing around derelict, space zombie, bio-contaminated infected space crafts, I get thrown back in. Next time, I'm taking the first air lock out of there.

Why? Michael Bay likes explosions. That is no rumor. However, rumor has it that he's set to create a film titled Zombies vs. Robots. Now, it seems in this day in age we are getting less creative with our titles and that we just want to get straight to the point. I'm looking at you Cowboys and Aliens. Either way, why the hell are zombies fighting robots? And why is Michael Bay involved? More questions than answers here. Great, now all I can picture is Optimus Prime with a chainsaw attachment splattered with blood with a tagline like: Some laws are made to be broken. And by laws, I'm referring to Asimov's laws for robots...watch a iRobot people!

Don't buy an iPad...before next week

Apple recently announced that next week, March 2nd to be exact, they will be holding an event for their second iPad iteration. So for all the recent iPad purchasers, if you haven't opened it yet, return it. If you have...don't look up any news about this event. What's to be expected for the iPad 2? Everything points to a camera or two being added, with possible additional ports for SD cards or USB, but nothing has really been confirmed yet. You'll just have to tune in like the rest of us to see what happens. The event kicks off at 10 am pacific, that's 1 pm for us east coast people, in San Francisco. If you haven't gotten your e-vite, it got lost in the mail.

Browncoats Never Say Die

Did anyone actually think they did? For fans of Firefly, Captain Malcom Reynolds, also known as Richard Castle and Captain Hammer, or just plain Nathan Fillion recently mentioned that he would definitely be up for playing Mal again. What does this sort of sweet nothing whispered into the ears of Firefly fans all across the world do? It gets them organized. Fillion mentioned that if he won the California lottery, the first thing he would do is buy the rights to the show. What happened next was a curious piece of mail arriving for Mr. Fillion, enclosed with California lottery tickets. Following Fillion's announcement, veteran writers of the series chimed in with their support. But it wasn't the writers that sparked so much interest in the fight for Firefly, but the fans of course. A website was launched called [Help Nathan Buy Firefly] (no joke, click through to check it out) which has goals set in mind, in particular generating enough support to have fans donate money for the cause. It's stuff like this that gives hope to fans of other doomed-but-loved scifi series (*cough* SGU *cough* Caprica *cough*). So fans, lend your support in whatever way you can. If you don't have money fear not, Firefly returns to syndication on the Science Channel at 8 pm on March 6 so watch just like you did in the old days, or like you did on DVD, or however you watched it. Keep hope alive and remember be a leaf on the wind.

Amazon takes the gloves off part of the way

It seems in the wake of some recent admission that Netflix is pwning the media [stream], Amazon decided to take it to the next level. This week, Amazon introduced Amazon Instant Video. What is it? Click and stream. Yeah, the same thing we've been doing with Netflix and Hulu for awhile now. For those with Amazon Prime memberships you don't have to shell out any extra cash because this is included in that membership. Nice right? Well if you have the student version you have to upgrade to get the same feature, otherwise it works kind of like the PSN or XBLA movie and TV rental/purchase business. Two prices, click for the one that best fits your wallet or personality. So what' so great about it? Not much. The current selection is pretty limited, unless you really want to watch the original The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and Let the Right One In you're probably not going to find much of interest. Of course, if we all think back to when Netflix first started their streaming service, it was pretty much the same deal. For now, you're stuck with the small selection, but given everything that Amazon has access to, we could be looking at a huge library before too long. Still, don't rush to sign up. If you've got a Netflix account there's no reason to switch, and if streaming stuff isn't your thing, then this obviously isn't for you either.

Dream on.
