The Legend

"Hey! Listen!" There's only one Legend and it ain't the Legend of Zorro. Okay to be fair, there are like something like fourteen, but we're here to talk about one in particular.

You may have heard of this awesome little video game called The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If you haven't you're missing out on one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time. Ask any die hard Nintendo fan and they'll probably reply with their list of top five and OoT (as it's known) will be up there for sure (if not then they clearly on John McClane enough). Well, since the development of the Nintendo DS and the porting of N64 titles to it, such as Super Mario 64 DS, Zelda fans have been waiting for chance to grasp the Master Sword in their hands again. Unfortunately, that never happened. But the wait is over, and we'll all be excited to hear Navi's annoying voice telling us where to look and what we should do again. On second hand, I could do without that.

However, this is not a feature in the new The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS (at least not yet). This weekend marked the opening of the Nintendo World 2011 3DS Demo Event, and the number one demo desired was  the 3DS makeover of the N64 classic. The demo offered users a chance to roam Kokiri Forest, and Inside the Deku Tree, including the boss fight with Gohma. For those who got their hands on the demo, such as those over at [IGN], they finally got the chance to spill the beans on some of the updates to OoT. Improvements include the ultimate utilization of the touch screen to switch items in your inventory, this will be most welcome when it comes to the iron boots and the Water Temple. Also, the first person mode, which for those who don't know is used when firing arrows, slingshot, hookshot, and boomerang, is now operated much like the augmented reality apps on the iPhone. The 3DS utilizes the gyros within it such that when you want to look up, you move the 3DS up, as if taking a picture, and if you want to look behind you just turn around. It should make things interesting, especially if you plan on playing this while on a bus or a train, since you may be doing a lot of awkward looking around while playing. There are also new camera controls which allow you to get a better look at Link's surroundings.

Let's not forget the improved graphics and added third dimension to the game. It stands to reason that there are more improvements that weren't entirely noticeable in the demo, let alone the first portion of the game. So what lies ahead for Link and his 3DS premiere? Well, for one thing OoT 3DS won't be released with the launch of the system itself, which is not entirely surprising, but still a tad bit disappointing (especially since Nintendo launched the Wii with Twilight Princess almost five years ago). Without a definite release date there could definitely be more improvements on the way, but from what has been see from the demo, I'd say the developers know what they are doing. To be honest, they could have just directly ported the game to the 3DS and I would still play it, but give me improved graphics, improved control scheme, and who knows what else and I'm already drooling.

Dream on.
