The Office (of 2.25.11)

Wondering which movie is ruling the box office this past weekend? If not, you're probably a normal person who is more concerned with what is going on in your own life than how much money is being spent to see a potential Oscar nominee for next year. If you're like me, this is some interesting stuff that details how exactly our country operates and interacts with media...more so it's just interesting to see where people's money is going.

Now to the new segment. By the way, if you are interested in this sort of thing you can look forward to it every Wednesday. For the weekend of February 25-27 the top 10 films at the box office were
  1. Gnomeo & Juliet - $14,213,000 ($75,147,106 cumulative)
  2. Hall Pass - $13,420,000 ($13,420,000 cumulative)
  3. Unknown - $12,435,000 ($42,840,168 cumulative)
  4. Just Go With It - $11,100,000 ($79,354,822 cumulative)
  5. I Am Number Four - $11,036,000 ($37,743,814 cumulative)
  6. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never - $9,200,000 ($62,776,491 cumulative)
  7. King's Speech, The - $7,618,000 ($114,509,271 cumulative)
  8. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son - $7,550,000 ($28,574,243 cumulative)
  9. Drive Angry 3D - $5,131,000 ($5,131,000 cumulative)
  10. Roommate, The - $2,050,000 ($35,927,618 cumulative)

I'm actually a little surprised that Gnomeo & Juliet is number 1, even though I haven't seen it and [Rotten Tomatoes] gave it 54%. I take that back. I'm more surprised that Big Mommas is on the board at all since I don't know anyone who has seen it and Rotten Tomatoes gave it 6%. Of course, the the first two in the series grossed $187,723,090 worldwide during their time in theaters according to [IMDB], more than I ever would have guessed. Looking at this list I noticed that I have not seen a single movie on it. How many have you seen? If you're answer is 1 I hope that it is The King's Speech. If you're answer to that is "yes" then I ask a follow up question: was it worthy of best picture?

The coming [week] has some more substantial theatrical releases such as The Adjustment Bureau and Beastly, a few that I actually plan on seeing, which will hopefully shake up the box office chart seeing as most of those on this week's list have been out for a few weeks. I'd like to think that March will be the true beginning of the 2011 moviegeddon, even if none of the coming releases are probably going to be considered best picture material, especially not Take Me Home Tonight. I will be seeing that by the way, you are now free to judge.

Dream on.
