The Rhythm (10)

My apologies for another late post, but vacation is vacation, and mine is winding down. So while I'm waiting for 127 Hours to download on my PS3 so I can review it, I figured I would take this chance to report the bitesized news about the week that was. It seems the past week mostly was about technology with GDC and the 3DS, as well as PS3 woes, and the iPad 2. Of course, it's not all tech as we get rumors about movies, tv, and oh yeah, did you forget Star Wars is going 3D? Check it all out below.

The Rhythm: supporting Lou Bega and [Mambo No. 5] since 1999.

The Mill: Big and Small Screen Edition

Big Screen: As most Shirefolk know, Peter Jackson's treatment of The Hobbit is being split into two movies, just like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. What we haven't known is the two different titles, but now we do? According to [TheOneRing.net], the two registered titles for the movies are The Hobbit: There and Back Again and The Hobbit: There and Back Again Again The Hobbit: An/The Unexpected Journey. I honestly would be perfectly fine with The Hobbit: Part 1 and Part 2. Or maybe the first could be The Hobbit and the second There and Back Again. I just don't know how I feel about that supposed second title.

Dr. Rush has much more scheming to do before he's done
Small Screen: For all the Gaters out there, you should be aware that Stargate Universe returns to Syfy this week on Monday nights instead of Tuesdays. We'll see what does for the ratings. But more importantly, rumors are out as to how the show may progress after it's bitter end after the last half of this season runs. Joseph Mallozzi, executive producer of SGU, has let slip on his blog that he is hoping for one or two movies to follow the final episode and allow the creators to actually wrap up the story of the Destiny, since they originally planned for five years. The other Stargate movies did a pretty decent job on DVD sales, and I'm more than happy for the crew of the Destiny to return in whatever form possible. Hell, I'll even pitch in some money. LG versus Sony, Round 1. Fight!

Weeks back I reported about how LG was a little upset by the integration of key Blu-Ray components in many Sony products, in particular the Playstation 3. This past week, LG brought the heat against Sony, as they successfully got an injunction passed against the company, in particular barring anymore PS3 consoles from being brought into Europe. PS3s have been seized all over the continent by customs, leaving the only supplies left in stores. This is a pretty big step in LG's battle against Sony, and it could spell trouble for us in the US before too long. I don't want to cause a panic or anything, but if you don't own a PS3 yet and you're looking to get one, you should probably get one sooner rather than later.

iPad 2 continued

Games will look and play even better than before
On Wednesday, Apple held an event launching the sequel to their touch tablet. For the most part, a lot of the rumors turned out to be true, and there wasn't much doubt to those: dual cameras, thinner, and connect-ability to televisions in HD. You can check out most of the specs over at Apple if you want better details, but I was more interested in a few of the additions they've come up with. For one, the smart cover seems like a great idea to protect your iPad 2 screen, as well as create a stand for it while you watch something, or to just create a better angle to work with it rather than flat on a table. Also, Apple's announcement of new apps such as iMovie, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, and more was a nice added bonus. It looks like the iPad 2 is truly becoming a forced to be reckoned with since it now almost has all of the abilities of a MacBook Pro. The iPad 2 officially goes on sale online and in stores on March 11.

Netflix goes 3D(S)!

Nintendo had a lot of great news coming out of the [GDC] this week, but an interesting tidbit that I failed to mention was the arrival of Netflix on the 3DS. There weren't many details on how this would work, whether you could use the built-in wifi to stream the movies and tv shows to the handheld, or they needed to be downloaded in some way. Either way, this is just another step in Netflix's move to dominate the [stream]. Here's hoping they'll do the same with Sony's NGP. It will be interesting to watch 3D movies on the 3DS since you won't need glasses, though I'm not currently aware of how many 3D movies are available through Netflix.

Now this is Podracing

It seems no one can escape the thrill of the third dimension these days, not even George Lucas. He announced last year that the entire Star Wars saga would be making a 3D transition and be brought back to the big screen. He also mentioned that they would be released in order, but not the originally released order, but rather I, II, III, and so on. That means, you'll be sitting through Jar Jar's floppy ears hitting you in the face before you see the bits of Alderaan flying at you. Lucas announced a release date for The Phantom Menace (Episode I) yesterday. When is it? February 10, 2012. No word as to when the others will be released, but for those who are fearful of the end of the world in December 2012, we can only hope that he releases them all in that year, but that's doubtful. Still, I'll be in line to see it, just because it's Star Wars and it's back on the big screen again.

Prepare to get Mauled...again...in 3D!

Dream on.
