The Versus (Pirates vs. Ninjas)

Since the dawn of Spike TV, back when it was TNN, there has been one question: Pirates or Ninjas? What a fitting discussion for International Day of the [Badass]. So, who wins when it comes down to it: the swashbuckling, rum swilling, dirty lords of the sea, or is it the silent, but oh so deadly, stealth assassins of the far east?

Pirates: 50%
Ninjas: 50%
Well, as I expected, it's a draw. Maybe it's about time we call this whole feud off. Both sides have merit, both sides have necessary skills, both sides are genuine badasses. You've got zombie pirates and teenage mutant turtle ninjas. I smell ultimate alliance. Though it is interesting that there seem to be far more movies about Pirates (in America) than there are about Ninjas these days. When I was a kid, I loved watching 3 Ninjas, an awesome movie about 3 brothers who learn karate from their grandfather and then have to go on a mission to save their dad. Awesome.

There was a much larger fascination with kung fu, karate, and martial arts back in the 80s and early 90s, like The Karate Kid series and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, we've swung over to Pirates of the Caribbean, with the fourth installment coming out this summer. Though there was an attempt with last year's remake, to bring martial arts back to the forefront. And Jackie Chan has been a huge hit in the past decade as well. It's good to know that despite this newer fascination, or rejuvenation for the love of pirates (one of my favorite movies with pirates in it is Swiss Family Robinson), there is still plenty of fervor for ninjas as well.

Dream on.
